George Washington's Socks #6

Chapter Ten

Matt thinks they are going to walk nine miles, all the way to the city where they are going to surprise the Hessians. Matt trudges and then is jerked all of sudden out of his thoughts by the officer who made him a soldier. The soldiers had started making fires but then that officer stopped them and said, "There will be no fires tonight."

So the men used the fence boards that they had been using for the fire for benches instead. Matt is trying to pull a board off of a fence for a bench. Then a young rebel leans over and helps him. Then they talk about a lot things: War, how the young rebel, Israel, got drafted, Israel's girlfriend, Abby, who is actually his 5 year old sister.

Then they talk about war wounds because Israel has a gash running down his left foot. So Matt gives him one of his shoes.
Then Matt is glad he has such big feet so that his shoes can fit Israel. And then Israel gives Matt a little bit of pigeon to eat. And then they talk more about being enlisted. The chapter ends with Israel and Matt discussing survival.

I think Israel was a lot like the older brother Matt always wanted.
